Barbara Filippone, the founder and president of EnviroTextiles, LLC (ET), is a 40 year veteran of the sustainable textile industry. Specializing in hemp and natural fiber textile development, she is widely recognized as one of the leading experts on natural and bast fiber development in the world. Through a career that has taken her to India, Hungary, Poland, South Korea, China, Canada, and Mexico, Barbara has developed more than a hundred hemp and natural fiber fabrics, 74 of which have been available for sale on the open market for over 20 years. Few others can match Barbara’s ‘field to fabric’ knowledge and/or experience establishing standards and precedents for the creation of new natural fiber industries including fiber, non wovens, composite fiber, yarns, wovens, and knits.
In addition to being instrumental in re-establishing and revitalizing the hemp textile industry in Romania and China, Barbara has also solidified her business associations in Mexico, establishing the foundation for Fair Trade practices and sustainable industries throughout the nation. These collaborations have resulted in the production and distribution of multiple raw material resources as seen in the Scotch Brite Scrubby ™ and other products including ET’s line of Beyond the Sun™ agave products. Filippone referenced the future of North and Central American natural fiber, ”The USA and Mexico will lead the way with new innovated value added raw material that will meet the growing trend clearly indicated by the USDA BioPreferred™ labeling program.”
