Plant-based Cheese Made From Hemp?
What product do you create when you combine an award winning chef and a behavioral economist? Dairy-free hemp cheese!
Co-founders, Veronica Fil and Shaun Quade, founded Grounded Foods, a food company that combines cauliflower, hempseeds, and other ingredients to create plant-base cheese. This wife and husband duo wanted to create a platform for alternative dairy-free cheese, that was cooked up by Chef Quade. Before moving to the United States, they ran a fine dining restaurant in Australia. At their restaurant, they incorporated blind tastings where the diners didn’t know what they’ll be served; great for any adventurous guest. At this particular tasting there was a plate that had a cheeseball — aesthetically different from the other dishes. When Veronica had a taste of this cheeseball, she thought it was just ordinary cheese, but a year later she found out it was made from hempseeds! “As an economist, I was like ‘hang on, this is really really interesting, this makes a lot sense, there’s nothing like this on the market.’ It solves a lot of problems, like in terms of scalability, sustainability, and functionality.”
