The National Hemp Association (NHA) recently conducted a survey to gather insights from industry stakeholders. This survey aimed to assess key opportunities and challenges facing the hemp industry and identify industry-wide perspectives on its future. Industry Opportunities When asked about the biggest opportunities in the hemp industry over the next five years, respondents pointed to multiple areas of growth. The expansion of industrial hemp markets was a common theme, with particular interest in hemp-based bioplastics, textiles, and construction materials like hempcrete. Additionally, there was significant enthusiasm for the increased use of hemp grain in food products, which many see as a viable alternative protein source.
Another key opportunity highlighted was the need for regulatory clarity, particularly concerning THC limits. Many respondents expressed hope that a more defined legal framework would encourage broader market development. In addition, advancements in processing technologies and the scaling up of fiber and grain production were frequently cited as crucial to industry growth.
A strong consensus emerged that industrial hemp should be regulated separately from cannabinoid hemp. Many survey participants emphasized that conflating these two markets creates unnecessary hurdles for industrial hemp businesses. Many emphasized the importance of passing the Industrial Hemp Act language, which would provide a clearer legal framework for industrial hemp cultivation and market expansion. Respondents saw this as a crucial step in ensuring that industrial hemp can compete on equal footing with other commodity crops and realize its full economic potential.
