The National Hemp Association is an advocacy group focused on hemp fiber and grain—the sectors in most need of agronomic support and supply chain development. Hemp fiber grown in the US presents a pathway to rural revitalization and import independence for everything from construction materials to auto parts, textiles and more. Hemp grain (or seed) farming and processing has the potential to transform nutrition and repatriate a vibrant but import-focused trade back within US borders.
Hemp Fiber
Industrial fiber is one of the oldest uses of the hemp plant. For millennia the long, durable strands of bast fiber were used to weave clothes, ropes, nets and sails. Today hemp fiber represents one of our industry’s biggest opportunities, especially here in the US. Hemp fibers are now being purpose-grown and used to manufacture textiles and apparel, high-value nonwoven materials like car parts and insulation, and a range of biocomposite materials that are in many cases stronger and longer-lasting than their synthetic counterparts.
Hemp Grain
Hemp grain is a densely nutritious oilseed that is cold-pressed into oil, hulled and processed into seeds for nutrition, ground into flour, and processed into high-protein powder. In 2018, the US FDA accepted hemp seed hearts, protein, and oil as GRAS (generally recognized as safe) food ingredients. The global hemp seed market is $710.7 million today, projected to reach $1.6 billion by 2027.
Hemp In Building & Construction
Studies show the air inside traditional homes can be three to five times more toxic than the air outside. Hemp construction eliminates toxins commonly found in housing and replacing them with a combination of hemp, lime, and water, creating insulation that contributes to a healthier home and is entirely recyclable. The result is living and working spaces that not only feel better but breathe with us, transforming lives in the process.
